Privacy Policy
Plain English first: BackyardPace does not collect, sell, or share your personal data. Everything the app records — your heart rate, GPS track, race times — stays on your device and syncs only to your own Apple Health account. We have no servers storing your race data.
Who we are
BackyardPace is developed and operated by Tim Dove, trading as BackyardPace (support@backyardpace.com). References to "we", "us", or "our" in this policy refer to BackyardPace.
What data the app collects
BackyardPace collects the following data during normal use. All of it is processed and stored locally on your devices.
- Heart rate — read from your Apple Watch sensors during a race. Used to display your BPM on the watch screen and saved to Apple Health when a race is complete.
- Location (GPS) — tracked by your Apple Watch during each lap. Used to record your route and calculate distance. Stored locally and written to Apple Health as part of your Workout record.
- Workout data — lap times, recovery windows, race duration, and distance are recorded and stored in the app's local database and written to Apple Health after each race.
- Race configuration — the race start time you enter is stored locally on your iPhone and Apple Watch for the duration of the race. It is not transmitted anywhere.
What data we do not collect
We do not collect, store, or have access to:
- Your name, email address, or any account information
- Your race data, GPS routes, or health metrics (these never leave your devices)
- Advertising identifiers or analytics data
- Crash logs or diagnostic data beyond what Apple automatically collects (see Apple's privacy policy)
- Payment information (purchases are processed entirely by Apple)
Apple Health integration
BackyardPace writes workout data to Apple Health (heart rate, GPS route, duration, distance, and calorie estimates) after each race. This data is governed by Apple's Health app permissions, which you control in your iPhone Settings. BackyardPace does not read any pre-existing data from Apple Health — we only write data from your BackyardPace races.
You can revoke Health permissions at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → BackyardPace.
Strava integration
If you choose to export a race to Strava, BackyardPace sends your GPS route and race data directly to Strava using the Strava API. This data transfer is initiated only when you explicitly tap "Upload to Strava." Strava's handling of your data is governed by Strava's Privacy Policy.
Third-party services
BackyardPace does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs. The only external services involved are:
- Apple App Store — handles app distribution and payment processing
- Apple Health — receives workout data you authorise
- Strava — receives race exports you explicitly initiate
Data retention and deletion
Your race data is stored locally on your iPhone. You can delete individual races within the BackyardPace app at any time. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data. Any data already written to Apple Health can be deleted from the Health app independently.
Because we have no servers or accounts, there is no data held by BackyardPace to delete or request — your data is yours, on your device.
Children's privacy
BackyardPace is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. The app is rated 4+ but is designed for adult endurance athletes.
Governing law
This privacy policy is governed by the laws of New Zealand, including the Privacy Act 2020. Changes to this policy
